What Is a Dental Crown?

Essentially, a dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap. They’re designed to fit snugly over the top of a tooth, completely encapsulating its entire visible surface. In addition to strengthening and cosmetically improving the tooth, the dental crown acts as a barrier to prevent further damage or decay. Each custom-made restoration is crafted from high-quality dental ceramic for seamlessly lifelike results that are built to last for years to come. Dental crowns can be used to address issues like:

  • Teeth that have been weakened by extensive decay or large fillings.
  • Teeth that have been chipped, cracked, or fractured.
  • Stained, small, misshapen, or otherwise cosmetically imperfect teeth.
  • Teeth that have just been treated with a root canal.
  • A missing tooth, when paired with a dental implant.

How Are Dental Crowns Placed?

Thanks to our state-of-the-art technology, placing a dental crown is now faster, more comfortable, and more precise than ever. First, we’ll remove a very thin layer of enamel to make room for your new restoration. Then, instead of using uncomfortable dental putty, we’ll take precise digital impressions of your teeth. This detailed information is sent to our CAD/CAM technology, where your Springfield dentist Dr. Aliana Henkin can design your unique dental crown in just a few minutes.

Once the final design is finished, it will be sent to our in-house milling machine and crafted out of a single block of high-quality dental ceramic. In about an hour, your brand-new custom dental crown will be finished and ready to be cemented in place. After we make sure your bite feels comfortable, you’ll be ready to go out and enjoy your newly restored smile all within a single day!

Understanding the Cost of Dental Crowns

One of the first questions people have when they learn they need a dental crown is, “How much will it cost me?” It’s natural to wonder about the pricing of your restoration to decide whether you can afford it. However, the final amount owed depends on your unique circumstances, so we cannot provide an estimate until you have your initial consultation.

Once Dr. Henkin examines your condition, our team will provide detailed information and take the time to talk you through it before proceeding. Continue reading to learn about how the rate of your dental crown is determined, and feel free to contact us for more information.

Factors That Affect the Cost of Dental Crowns

You may not pay the exact same amount for your prosthetic as someone else because it’s based on your individual situation. Several variables are considered when calculating the total, such as:

  • The severity of your condition. You'll be responsible for each additional fee if your tooth requires additional treatments like a filling or root canal.
  • The material used. Your artificial tooth can be created from amalgam, gold, resin, or porcelain, which can affect the price.
  • How it’s designed. Traditional dental crowns are created at a special laboratory, which can accrue additional expenditures over one created with a CEREC milling machine onsite.

Though it can be tempting to opt for the least expensive options, remember that quality is often reflected in the price when it comes to dental work. Having a well-made restoration increases its accuracy and longevity.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Dental Crowns?

Most dental insurance plans cover about 50% of major procedures like root canals and crowns. There’s no guarantee, though, because all policies are different. You may want to verify your information to understand your benefits better. As you do, you might learn about other restrictions or qualifications that need to be met, like a deductible, waiting period, or restriction on how many teeth can be treated.

If you’re struggling to find the information or are unsure about your dental plan, feel free to ask for help! Our friendly office staff are familiar with many policies and can assist you with paperwork or claims.

Options for Making Dental Crowns Affordable

We understand that not everyone carries dental insurance and that you might feel anxious about the cost of your procedure. We also know that getting a quality dental crown can potentially protect and preserve your smile for 15+ years, and we don’t want your budget to hold you back.

If you’re worried about the cost of your treatment, you can apply for a flexible financing package through CareCredit. If your paperwork is approved, this program allows you to break down your final invoice into more manageable installments.

Dental Crown FAQs

Will I Have Dietary Restrictions with a Same-Day Crown?

In addition to being more convenient and looking incredibly natural, there is another considerable benefit of CEREC same-day crowns: there aren’t any dietary restrictions! All we ask is that you exercise caution with extremely crunchy and sticky foods, like hard pretzels and taffy. For the longevity of your restoration, it’s also important that you don’t chew on ice, bite your nails, smoke, or use your teeth as tools to open things.

What’s the Cost Difference Between Same-Day and Lab-Made Crowns?

Patients often assume that same-day crowns will cost significantly more than lab-made crowns. That’s usually not the case! After all, there’s no need for a temporary restoration or multiple appointments. Plus, dental insurance providers often cover a portion of the cost. So, the cost difference often ends up being relatively minimal.

Is It a Dental Emergency If Your Crown Falls Off?

A same-day visit to our office isn’t always necessary, but you should definitely call us right away so we can schedule an appointment within the next few days at the very least. In the meantime, don’t chew on that side of your mouth, take OTC pain medication as directed, and keep your restoration somewhere safe, like a small, clean container. Once you arrive at our office, we can determine if your dental crown can be re-cemented back in place or if a new one needs to be made to effectively restore your healthy, happy smile.

What Happens If You Wait Too Long to Get a Dental Crown?

Patients are often tempted to take the “wait and see” approach if they struggle with dental-related anxiety or they don’t feel like the situation is urgent because they aren’t in pain. However, our Springfield dental team will only recommend a dental crown if you really need one. If you have any questions or concerns about your oral health and treatment options, please let us know! We’d be happy to answer any questions you have, discuss why a dental crown is needed, and do what we can to make the treatment process as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Are Dental Crowns Permanent?

No, dental crowns are not permanent. Typically, they last anywhere from 5-15 years. If you want yours to last for a decade or more, then it’s important to commit to good habits (i.e., flossing consistently, scheduling a dental checkup and cleaning twice a year, wearing a mouthguard during sports). Of course, it’s equally as important that you break bad ones, like smoking and chewing on ice cubes, as well.

Can I Whiten My Dental Crown?

Although dental crowns look and feel just like the real thing, they are artificial. So, they don’t respond to teeth whitening treatments like your natural teeth. In fact, doing so can weaken the bonding material holding your restoration in place, which is why we strongly advise against it. Ultimately, the best thing to do if you want to explore your treatment options is to schedule a consultation with us. That way, we can learn about your smile goals and how we can make them a reality.
